About Brian Hsu

I am a PhD student in Computer Science at The University of Chicago, advised by Prof. Ian Foster and Dr. Arvind Ramanathan. I am also a visiting researcher at Argonne National Labs. I am interested in applying reinforcement learning algorithms for automating scientific workflows and self-driving labs. I focus on automating experiments with LLM-powered robotics, and deploy scalable and robust reasoning algorithms for hypothesis generation and advanced planning. I have experience with contrastive learning and reinforcement learning methods, diffusion models + LLMs, and agentic learning frameworks. I received an M.S. in Statistics and Data Science at Northwestern University, where I was advised by Prof. Bradly Stadie. Before that, I received a B.A. double major in Statistics and Biology from Northwestern University, where I was advised by Prof. Alexandria Volkening.
