About Brian Mahecha

Graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Florida Atlantic University; majored in Political Science with a minor in History. Completed a certificate in Asian Studies in addition to the B.A. Received an A.S. from Broward College in Computer Programming and Analysis. Passionate about pursuing my life goals. Diagnosed in 2006 with cancer in my left shoulder at 17 years of age. The whole experience of facing cancer profoundly changed my life. It made me realize how life can be taken away from you in an instant. Survived the radical surgery, during which one of my rotator cuff muscles was removed, and the intense radiation procedure for two months afterwards. Kept a positive attitude. Was told that full movement would never be regained in my left arm but six months later I obtained my black belt in Kung Fu and a year later resumed competition in martial arts. Have also medaled in many recognized Martial Arts and Jiu Jitsu competitions. Was a member of the USA National Grappling Team in 2009 and 2010. Competed in Krakow, Poland and became the world champion in my weight class in 2010. Also had the opportunity to participate in the 2016 Olympics if grappling is added. Feeling better now than ever. I live my life by this Gandhi quote:"Live as if you were to die tomorrow, learn as if you were to live forever."
