About Brian Mathews

Brian Mathews has a broad range of project management experience in solid waste management including recycling, composting, organics program development, ordinance enforcement program development. As Senior Program Manger, Brian Mathews led the agency efforts in ordinance enforcement for the Alameda County Waste Management Authority (dba StopWaste.Org) and oversaw a range of core agency activities including Property Management, fee collection, investigations, and litigation. Mr. Mathews actively participated in regulation development particularly in the areas of composting, solid waste facilities, air emissions and compliance. As Property Manager, Mr. Mathews was directly responsible for tenant relations, contract management, range management and environmental stewardship of sensitive habitats on Agency property. Mathews lead the negotiating team for the removal of 750 100 kW first generation wind turbines to be replaced with 20 -1.79 MW next generation turbines. The the 30 year repowering contract reduces avian impacts, increases agency revenue, and supports a more sustainable Alameda County. As Lead Enforcement Officer/Official he oversaw field inspectors and investigators who monitor compliance with Landfill Ban, Mandatory Recycling, Facility Fee and Reusable Bag ordinances. He led a team of professionals for all enforcement planning and implementation. Work Areas: Negotiations/Settlement Agreements, Ordinance Enforcement, Inter/Intra Agency Relations, Education and Outreach to the Regulated Community, Compliance Monitoring, Team Building, Management and Administration, Budget Development, Communications and Strategic Planning, Criminal and Civil Investigations. In retirement Mr. Mathews continues to stay involved and gives back to the community through volunteering with the Alameda County Sheriffs Office Search and Rescue team. As a Lieutenant with the unit, Mathews is responsible for unit cohesion, search management, oversight and training as needed and/or directed by unit command. Mr. Mathews has trained for Incident Command roles, Managing the Lost Person Incident, and stays current with medical and other skill requirements for active service.
