Background
About Brian McCarthy
I am a highly motivated and innovative electronic engineering PhD graduate with significant system design experience. Having grown my key skills and adaptability in research and throughout my various roles in industry, I am now further growing my skills as an Applications Engineer in the Battery Monitoring Systems group in Analog Devices. I graduated with a B Eng in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from University College Cork in 2005 and I also hold an M Eng Sc in Microelectronic Design obtained in 2007. More recently I graduated with a PhD which was entitled "The Development of an Algorithm to Track Blood Pressure Accurately Based on the Pulse Transit Time Method". During my PhD, I worked in many different aspects of engineering, from the design, development and implementation of physiological health monitoring systems to ultimately the design of an algorithm which allowed the non-invasive and continuous measurement of Blood Pressure. During this time, I developed and grew my key skills to include PCB design, LabView development, firmware and Matlab programming, as well as expanding my knowledge of statistical methods. Combining these skills, I developed the new algorithm and filed a patent based on both the algorithm and associated system in Decemeber 2014. I have also worked in Tyndall as a research assistant between graduating from my Masters and finishing my PhD. These projects have included design and implementation of various systems and the development of hardware, firmware and GUIs for a range of applications. This range includes a wireless car park application, a wireless electricity monitoring system and various wireless/wearable biomedical applications. Since my time in Tyndall, I have worked as a hardware engineer in RSA Securities, as a Product Engineer in Microsemi/Microchip before initially joining Analog Devices as a Design Evaluation Engineer in the Isolation group. I am currently working as a Senior Applications engineer in the Battery Monitoring Systems group in Analog Devices, developing novel algorithms and applications with a particular focus on improving the experience for EV customers and Energy Storage Systems to provide better insights and longer life to their systems Specialties: PCB Design, Systems Integration, Wireless Sensor Networks, Matlab, Embedded Programming, Algorithm Development, Statistical Analysis, LabVIEW, Arduino, Processing
