Background

About Brian Postalian

I’m a producer, educator, and interdisciplinary artist with over 15 years of experience bringing live performance to life—often in public spaces and unexpected places. Whether I’m collaborating with independent artists or mid-to-large scale organizations and festivals across Canada, I’m driven by a deep belief in the power of live events to transform space, shift perspectives, and connect people. My practice spans immersive productions, participatory performance, strategic producing, and inclusive project design. I thrive in environments that require adaptability, big-picture thinking, and a healthy dose of ambition. A reviewer once described me as “clearly unafraid to try just about anything”—a spirit I bring into every rehearsal room, production meeting, and community partnership. As founding Artistic Director of Re:Current Theatre, I’ve helmed award-winning performances like The Smile Off Your Face (SummerWorks Best Production, NOW Magazine Outstanding Production and Direction), and New Societies, an interactive strategic board game for the stage that toured nationally and premiered in Mandarin online at the National Theatre & Concert Hall of Taiwan. I also co-created and served as Associate Director on Access Me, a queer Disability Arts performance made with the Boys in Chairs Collective; receiving three 2024 Dora Mavor Moore Award nominations, won for Outstanding Direction (Independent), and was published in Interdependent Magic: Disability Performance in Canada by Playwrights Canada Press. In addition to collaborating with a wide range of institutions and collectives, I also work as a contractor and grant writer for artists and companies across the country, securing major support from the Canadian Heritage, Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, BC Arts Council, and multiple levels of foundation, municipal, and private funding. In parallel to my producing and artistic work, I’m a dedicated arts educator and facilitator having taught at Toronto Metropolitan University, University of Toronto, and Simon Fraser University, I’m a certified practitioner of Liz Lerman’s Critical Response Process and regularly lead workshops focused on how to give and receive effective feedback. At heart, I’m a connector—between disciplines, between people, and between ideas and execution. I love working alongside artists, agents, designers, technicians, and community partners to make meaningful work happen. I aim to create projects that feel generous, rigorously made, and unforgettable to those who experience them.
