Background

About Brian R. Wasik

I am a biology researcher and educator broadly interested in viral infectious diseases. My research career has spanned 20 years across three institutions (IndianaU, Yale, Cornell), resulting in a publication record of accomplishment. My research has been driven by the larger question of how viruses adapt (or fail to adapt) to complex selection environments, in an attempt to build foundational knowledge to inform predictions of future adaptations (i.e. emergence, virulence). My current system of study is focused in respiratory viral disease (influenza) in non-human systems. I both engage in experimental systems of virus:host interactions, phylogenetic and epidemiological analysis of ongoing lineages in animals, and collaborative work in using machine-learning capabilities to determine risk factors for spillovers, emergence, and host-shift adaptation.Sources of funding include: NIH-NIAID, NSF, and internal grant support from the Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine.
