About Brian Rainey

I got into higher education because from a very young age, I was captivated by the ability of the written word to creatively communicate ideas and influence thinking. Having the space to learn, write creatively and express ideas was an irresistible draw. Higher ed has not only afforded me the opportunity to read widely and write; it has also allowed me to help people from a wide variety of backgrounds communicate their own ideas through speaking and writing. At the end of the day, what motivates me is a robust, good-faith exchange of creative ideas, and I enjoy working in institutions for which that is the ultimate goal. With respect to writing, I have published numerous pieces, from a longer, monograph-style book to short commentaries. I like to put a great deal of thought into my writing and try to pursue angles and perspectives that others have not considered. With regard to speaking, I have prepared and given countless lectures, talks and sermons for classes, symposia, conferences, churches, and religious groups. I received a Ph.D. in Religious Studies with a focus on the Hebrew Bible and the ancient religions of the Middle East because I believe that all religion is, fundamentally, about the deep importance of story and narrative in shaping perspectives on the world. The Bible, in particular, is one of many enduring examples of the written word’s power.
