About Brian Rankin

In my current role in Choice Housing I am responsible for energy and sustainability management, progressing the decarbonisation of our homes, whilst also reducing energy costs and ensuring that fuel poverty is alleviated.My previous roles include leading on sustainability for Newry, Mourne & Down District Council, working across the areas of sustainability, environment, energy, biodiversity and sustainable foods. As part of this role I led on collaborative energy tenders across 10 local councils and also supported the delivery of high speed electric vehicle charging points in our District, through the FASTER project.I've also previously had a leading role within the Heat Policy Branch in the Department for the Economy on current and future Heat Policy for Northern Ireland, including low carbon heating solutions such as heat pumps, heat networks and biofuels.During my previous time at Choice Housing, as Energy Manager, I was responsible for energy and environmental management, which included their sister company, Oaklee Housing, in RoI. I have experience in energy efficiency measures, energy procurement, invoice validation, innovation, renewable technologies, EPCs, environmental standards and legislation, and engagement with consumers and stakeholders in various ways. I have undertaken training on higher energy standards for new homes (the subject of my MSc Dissertation) and engaged with various stakeholders in social housing and the wider construction sector. In 2009 I designed and built my own home and in 2013 I installed a Solar PV system as a way to reduce my energy consumption, energy costs and environmental impact further.
