I’ve come to enjoy the challenge that working with manufacturing processes brings. There is always a need for a better way: faster, safer, less cost, and less variation in order to solve problems and deliver a better return on investment. Succeeding in that effort requires an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the processes and important product characteristics. I enjoy mentoring others to enable their success as well. Continuous Improvement is the backbone of a successful production operation. Although many Kaizen projects are small improvements, I’ve enabled large impacts as well, for example: • Received 5 “Gates Technological Awards”, one of which was for a new product innovation which enables power transmission belts to be produced at any length. This added a new product to Gates’ lineup. • Designed a new process, machine, and raw material to join laminated fabric sheets that reduced the defect rate by 40%. • Saved per year by designing a key mold seal, application process, and equipment which reduced leakage defects in the plant’s largest product line by 31%. • Designed a mold injection device and filling process saving per year and reducing waste by 7 dumpster loads per year. I’m fortunate to have experienced manufacturing challenges from several perspectives, including Product/Process Development Engineer, Process Engineer (Quality), and finally Engineering Manager of a very successful and high-performance team.
