About Brian Torrie

Brian was the Director General of the Directorate of Safety Management at the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission where he was responsible for defining strategies and policies with respect to management systems, human performance, training qualification and certification. Brian was previously the Director General of Regulatory Policy where he was responsible for the development of CSNC’s regulatory framework including regulations, regulatory guidance and reform. Brian first joined CNSC in 2007 as Director of the Environmental Assessment Division in the Technical Services Branch where he was responsible for CNSC’s environmental assessment process under the Nuclear Safety and Control Act and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. Prior to joining CNSC, he gained varied experience in the federal public service in roles where he demonstrated his ability to manage and lead on key files. He was the Panel Manager for the Voisey's Bay Environmental Asessment Review Panel where effectively managed a process of collaboration among the federal, provincial (Newfoundland and Labrador), Innu and Inuit Governments. Brian follwed that job up with an assignment as Canada's Senior Negoaitaor on the Innu Nation Comprehensive Land Claim dealling with a wide range of issues within federal jurisdiction. He has also had other assignments - at Immigation Canada where he managed Canada's Permanent Resident Card implementations and at the Department of Finance where he was part of a team that establsihed the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada.
