Background

About Brian Voce

I am an Artist and Teacher of Art and Design. I hold a 7407 Level Four Stage 3 teaching qualification, have D32/33 assessor awards and I am a Fellow of the HEA. I have been involved in the delivery of a wide range of Art and Design Programs since 1982, working in Community Arts, Adult Education, Special Needs. I have taught GCE AS and A2 students, National Diploma, Foundation Course and Undergraduate students. I continue to make my own work. This is important personally and makes me a more effective teacher of Art and Design.(I am continually reminded of the pitfalls, frustrations, and distractions facing everyone, student and professional alike when pursuing a creative activity.) Ideas are never the problem. Time is infact the most precious commodity. I find that ideas 'tumble' over each other combining and overlapping as the opportunities and time spaces to create my work are limited by the responsibilities of adult life. I graduated from Brighton Polythechnic in 1981 with an honours degree in Wood Metal Ceramics and Plastics (Crafts). I continued to develop my work both 2 and 3 dimensionally but now mostly work with 2D in paint, print (both digital and traditional) and mixed media (encaustic).Since I have begun teaching on the BA Graphic Design Course at Lincoln University I have realised that text is beginning to feature more predominantly in my work. Reflecting on my work it is apparent to me that the unifying themes are the relationship between formal structure and disharmony time and human interaction with the environment. Inspiration comes from many sources (too many to list here) but particularly maps, grids, archaeology repeating forms, chance paint dribbles and runs, decay, nature, buildings, newspaper articles, BBC Radio 4.
