About Brian Yates

Writing, publishing, research, teaching, and co-leading on the intersections between psychological services, research, economics, and program evaluation is my professional focus. I have published or have in-press 100 articles, book chapters, and online pieces, including 5 books published and a 6th in production at Guilford Press for 2023. Most of my publications apply cost-effectiveness or cost-benefit analysis to the systematic evaluation and improvement of human services. In 1976 I received a Ph.D. in psychology from Stanford University, and began working as a full-time tenure-track professor at American University in Washington. In 1981 I testified before a US Congressional subcommittee on the cost-benefit of psychological treatments. I have conducted what I used to call "Cost - Procedure - Process - Outcome Analysis (CPPOA") for human service enterprises and research initiatives in prevention of alcohol, tobacco, and other substance abuse and suicide, and in treatment of opiate, cocaine, and alcohol addictions, residential programs for urban youth and for mentally retarded adults, and consumer-operated services. My manual for measuring, reporting, and improving cost, cost-effectiveness, and cost-benefit, was published in by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and continues to be available at the NIDA website. I have presented workshops and research findings on cost-effectiveness, cost-benefit, and cost-utility analyses in Australia, Canada, Romania, the UK, and New Zealand as well as the US, where I continue to enjoy being a tenured full-time professor at American University. I teach exclusively on-line. My regular courses include Health Psychology, Theories of Personality, and Self-Management.
