About Britni Skillman

I am currently employed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Forensic Science at Sam Houston State University where I teach forensic science courses, oversee graduate student research, and deliver toxicology-specific training. I was formerly employed as a toxicologist at the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences aiding in method development and validation as well as performing data review for various analyses and types of casework. I earned a BS degree in Forensic Chemistry and Criminal Justice in 2015, then a PhD in Forensic Science from SHSU in 2019. My research interests are in forensic toxicology, with particular focus on sedative hypnotics and novel psychoactive substances, ionization suppression and matrix effects phenomena, and the enhancement of validation techniques for forensic toxicology. My research and professional experience includes working with instrumentation such as LC/Q-TOF/MS, LC/MS/MS, GC/MS(/MS), and HS-GC/FID for the analysis of drugs, volatiles, and toxicants in a variety of different biological specimens. I am certified as a Fellow with the American Board of Forensic Toxicology, was formerly licensed as an analyst by the Texas Forensic Science Commission while performing casework, and have received training and certification as a Phlebotomy Technician to help elevate research initiatives while at SHSU.
