Primary focus areas include development, synthesis, processing, and characterization of technical ceramic materials for high-temperature applications and advanced energy conversion materials and devices. Additional areas of expertise include wear-resistant coatings, design and characterization of industrial additive manufacturing materials, powder metallurgy, mechanical alloying, synthesis and characterization of PVD coatings, and development of novel metastable alloys by solid-state synthesis such as boron-rich compounds and metal matrix composites. Received a Ph.D. in Materials Science & Engineering from Iowa State University in following an M.S. degree in solid-state Physics from the University of Iowa. Background includes over 20 years of research and program management on a wide range of materials for power generation and wear-resistance applications, including more than 80 publications, 10 issued patents, and 2 book chapters. Taught introductory classes in materials science & engineering and engineering fundamentals at Iowa State University. Collaborated on Department of Energy (DOE)-funded research involving ceramic powder processing, lead-free solder, and advanced permanent magnets. Received DOE and NASA awards for contributions to the Cassini program.
