About Bruce Spencer

Bruce Spencer research career spans 35 years in universities, government and private industry. As a tenured full professor and later as an adjunct at UNB, he supervised 23 graduate students and taught 50 university courses. As a senior researcher at NRC, he has led seven projects with large and small partners, which included corporations Agfa Healthcare Canada, Bell Canada and a startup Pinpoint Selling. Bruce's project included collaborations with universities including UNB, Carleton, and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. These projects totalled $9M with 61 staff. Bruce’s former work with startup companies includes Fiddlehead, iPSNP, and Eyesover, where he has developed core technology and assisted with successful funding applications in excess of $750K. His current interests include analyzing comments and reviews from social media, computing accurate temperature forecasts for energy efficiency, and applying open data to agricultural consulting. Bruce has over 90 research publications, and 40 international talks in machine learning, data mining, automated reasoning, e-commerce, and service computing. In 2013 his team won an international semantic web reasoning competition.
