Background

About Bruce Thomson

Love your voice: it’s bringing you to the world! I believe everyone has a goldmine within them and I like to help them excavate. I have over twenty years of experience in adult education, with the last fifteen devoted to the enhancement of public speaking effectiveness. This led me to pursue training as a voice teacher in 2014, as one day the seemingly obvious struck me: how do you speak effectively without a powerful voice? My work combines the wisdom of the Ancient Greek and Roman experts right up to the work of some of the greatest modern voice teachers such as Cicely Berry, Patsy Rodenburg, Christina Shewell and Arthur Lessac. In 2016 I became a designated Lessac Practitioner, the first level of accreditation in his inspiring approach to voice and body training known as Kinesensics. I am one of only several practitioners in Australasia, and intend to pursue further training in this work over the next few years. It is a truly inspiring, practical and life-affirming approach to the voice. I see it as not only an enhancement to performance - both theatrical and other forms of professional - but also to psychological and physical health. Recently I trained in the Heather Lyle Vocal Yoga method, a wonderful combination of ancient wisdom and modern scientific insight devised by the inspirational Los Angeles voice teacher Heather Lyle. I am also one of only several Australians certified in this. I wish to engage with anyone who has a passion for communication and would like to utilise their voice to greater effect. Though the skills of numeracy and literacy are clearly vital, I believe their spoken counterpart ORALITY is sadly neglected. I also believe that it is only through enhanced spoken communication that we can make the kinds of connections we need to deal with the overwhelming complexity of the modern world. I would welcome contact with anyone interested in the development of enhanced and invigorated spoken communication.
