Background
About Bryan Boatman
Opportunity"(2008-2011) A friend of mine became investor in an upstart fluids company and was looking for good help. I was hired and the company was immediately acquired by National Oilwell Varco (NOV). Mixing field experience with office experience in Texas all the while teaching classes at church and overseeing several ministries, I was gaining valuable organizational and leadership experience in the corporate and non-profit (church) settings."Failure"(2011-2018) NOV binged on acquisitions for years as a way to capture market share. Over 200 acquisitions in 10 years? Internally, the company was getting duct taped together. Communications, financial management, leadership, and operations were all feeling the disconnects. My friend was a Regional Mgr at the time. He took me out of the field to conduct financial forensics on multimillion dollar expenses at our Victoria facility. Nothing shady. Just growing pains of business. Over 2 years, millions of dollars were saved and the organization sorted out.$10M saved or roughly 20% waste eliminated. But that success was short lived. Saudi Arabia flooded the market with oil in 2014, deciding unilaterally against their OPEC partners that they would drive oil prices into the ground. They succeeded. We began really feeling the effects in late 2015. The money dried up. I was renegotiating contracts for our supply chain, but that wasn't going to cut it. 2017 was a catastrophe. I laid off many wonderful people. While this was going on professionally, spiritually I became the Sr. Pastor role at a church. The church grew. Finances were stable. So at the beginning of 2018 I resigned from the O&G industry to devote more time to ministry. That was the plan for a couple years and my team members at NOV knew. The sad part was by that time at NOV there weren't team members left who hadn't been spread across the organization or let go. Success and failure in an organization teach their own lessons."Purpose"(2018- Now) I've realized I'm driven by purposes outside of myself. I've learned to enjoy a variety of things, but it's very difficult to stay motivated where there is no growth. Pastoring a church is a different animal than "for profit" business. And I've been in leadership in 3 churches in their various life cycles: starting one, triaging one, and building one. I am happily married. We've had 5 children, though 1 has passed, all with college degrees pursuing their goals. At this point in my life, as we have ventured out to begin a new church, I am ready to return to the business world.
