Background
About Bryan Meulmeester
After several years of developing mobile apps for iOS, Android, Android TV, and Android Wear, I decided it was time to explore new territory. I transitioned into web development and quickly gravitated toward PHP-focused backend projects, working with frameworks like Magento 2, Symfony 2, and Laravel. The shift gave me a broader view of backend architecture, databases, and scalable systems. Following a few exciting Magento 2 projects, I wanted to dive deeper into e-commerce and PIM solutions. That led me to Summica, where I worked on large-scale platforms within the SAP Hybris ecosystem. It was an incredibly rewarding experience, collaborating with both colleagues and international clients to build powerful, high-performance solutions that could handle complex commerce workflows. After about a year and a half at Summica, I was ready for a new challenge. In 2019, I joined Foleon as a backend developer, working on their PHP-based back-end. It was an exciting time to join, as the company was scaling fast and the engineering culture was evolving rapidly. I soon found myself thinking beyond just code, spotting opportunities to improve the structure and collaboration of our teams. This led me to become a certified Scrum Master and take on a more active role in shaping the development organization. I helped transition Foleon from siloed front-end and back-end teams into multidisciplinary squads that worked more closely with product and marketing. This effort earned me a promotion to back-end chapter lead in mid-2021, where I focused on guiding backend engineers in their growth and tackling larger architectural decisions alongside other leads. In 2022, I was promoted to Engineering Manager. This role added a new layer of responsibility: people management, hiring, performance development, and salary planning. I currently lead two cross-functional teams made up of engineers, QA engineers, UI/UX designers, product owners, and scrum masters. It’s been incredibly rewarding to help build and scale teams, not just technically, but also culturally. Most recently, I’ve been one of the driving forces behind Foleon’s transition from Scrum to Basecamp’s “Shape Up” methodology, enabling our teams to work in a more focused, autonomous, and outcome-driven way. Throughout my career, I’ve combined hands-on development skills with a passion for team dynamics, architecture, and continuous improvement. My background in mobile, backend, and organizational leadership has given me a strong foundation in modern software practices and SaaS businesses.
