I'm the type of person who can't sit idle, so in those rare moments when I'm not fully tasked I translate my passion for programming and refusal to stagnate into small projects geared toward the automation of rote tasks performed by my team in an effort to not only free up developer time for more critical project pursuits but expand my skill set as well. When I worked for InnovaSystems, it used to take around 4 hours to fully baseline a development or test server; we maintained an enterprise-level system employing over 60 databases, some of which are huge. To solve the problem, I created a fully-configurable application in C# using SMO which handles SQL Server job management/creation, production database restoration, user mapping/permissions, and alias/linked server/SSIS package management. The entire baseline process now takes less than an hour. I also don't like the thought of being pigeonholed. Working through my current employer, I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to expand my existing skill set into the Oracle database and SSRS realms while also being granted the opportunity to use ASP.NET MVC to work on the team’s application and reporting portal. Among my peers, I'm considered the go-to guy for troubleshooting complex data issues as I have a knack for quickly tracking down hard-to-find anomalies hidden in large volumes of data. My database unit tests are considered the gold standard in our shop and it's rare that scenarios challenged with my code introduce bugs to the system. A consummate team player, I mentor junior (and occasionally other senior) developers as needed. Whether it's a desire to learn a new skill or strengthen an existing one, I have no problem donating time to those who want to learn. After all, it's ultimately the team that realizes the success of the project, not the individual.
