Dr. Bryony Richards is, at her core (pun intended), an economic geologist with a passion for advanced imaging techniques, exploring everything from distant galaxies to gamma rays. She currently serves as a research scientist at the Energy & Geoscience Institute (EGI) at the University of Utah, where her work spans scales from satellite imaging to nanoscopic analysis. Dr. Richards earned her Ph.D. from Royal Holloway, University of London, where she specialized in petrography, geochemistry, and thermochronology, focusing on the geological evolution of the eastern Gondwana margin. She previously completed her B.Sc. in Geological Sciences with First-Class Honors from University College, Durham University. With a career spanning four continents, Dr. Richards has extensive experience in diverse geological settings, including significant kimberlite research in southern Africa and copper exploration in Namibia’s Kaokoland region. Her projects have received substantial support from international governments, private sector firms, and industry stakeholders. Dr. Richards is widely recognized for her expertise in critical mineral exploration and pioneering work in re-mining historical mine waste using cutting-edge remote sensing technologies, including hyperspectral imaging. Her research has improved mineral detection capabilities while promoting environmental sustainability, directly addressing the rising demand for critical minerals essential to renewable energy, electronics, and electric vehicles. A leader in applying scientific innovation to solve practical challenges, Dr. Richards continues to advance both scientific knowledge and broader economic and environmental goals.
