About Caleb Chen

I am an independent researcher in the field of education with a background as a qualified primary and special education teacher, specialising in gifted education. Over the past 13 years, I have been dedicated to teaching in primary schools in Taiwan, which has given me a deep understanding of the challenges and rewards that educators face daily. In addition to my teaching qualifications, I am also a certified mentor teacher, allowing me to guide and supervise novice teachers as they navigate their early careers. My passion for education extends into my research, where I focus on areas such as curriculum design, teacher motivation, teacher agency, and professional development. In 2015, my master dissertation, which won the annual Best Thesis Award from Chinese Association of Gifted Education, is a testament to my commitment to advancing knowledge in the field of gifted education. Currently, my research interests focus on teacher autonomy, particularly within alternative education settings. I am fascinated by how educators in these environments navigate their roles and exercise their agency. Outside of education, I have a few personal passions that keep me grounded and energised. I’m an amateur trumpet player and am currently learning to play the French horn. Additionally, I train myself to run long distances, having completed two marathons and countless half marathons. Running continues to be a source of joy and motivation in my life.
