About Calla Flanagan

Video and Photography have always allowed me to revisit emotions and events that have shaped me into the artist I am today. The more I documented, the easier it was for me to re-live moments in my life and use them as tools for healing, processing, and communicating. They also serve as little glimpses into history of American and Chicago youth culture surrounding the do-it-yourself music scene. In an industry where musicians and artists have been taken advantage of, the DIY music scene provides a shelter and escape for many people who are looking for creative outlets and a future where they can pursue music. In these houses-turned-venues, people are given the freedom to let loose and share a common love of music and art. It is in these spaces where people can truly be themselves in a world where they feel disillusioned. I seek to document those feelings and acts of passion, excitement, and ecstasy in my photography and videography.
