About Callum McKercher

Since obtaining my Bachelors in Environmental Science (Majoring in Ecology and Conservation) with a First Class Honours and coauthoring a scientific publication in 2018 I have significantly advanced my career in the environmental field. After a short break, I started by becoming a Bush Regenerator at Ecosure in 2020. From there I developed my plant ID skills, people management and site management skills and continued to develop my communication abilities. I developed the confidence in myself and my skill set to become the leader of the Friends of Pine Ridge Conservation Park. I supervise the group's restoration works and educational activities, write grant applications and communicate with various stakeholders. From there I started my own Ecological Restoration business (Red-Eye Regen) and have been doing small, manageable works for various clients including State government bodies. Since October 2022 I have worked for Brisbane City Council as an Environmental Officer. I decided on this shift in career to learn more about environmental legislation and improve my employability. It has been an amazing experience to continue to learn and push my boundaries within the industry, gain invaluable environmental knowledge and network. My personal hobbies, including animal and plant photography and exploring national parks, have led me to develop GIS skills (map making) and further my plant and animal ID skills (calsphotography12 for images). I have also volunteered for several organisations include Native Plants Queensland (Gold Coast), Friends of Nerang National Park (small mammal trapping) and the Quoll Socity of Australia (trapping and field work). Other qualifications I have obtained along through way include a venomous snake handling and fauna spotter catcher qualification, ACDC licence, Biocondition Survey and RE Survey Training and a Cert 3 in Conservation and Land Management (currently undertaking).
