About Calum Joyce

My hobbies include playing music, listening to music, computer games, playing American football and reading. I can play the guitar and drums and at one time formed a band with friends, in which I handled arranging places to practice and entering events. Taking part in this improved my social skills greatly and helped develop my organisation skills. Playing computer games has allowed me to improve team work skills and mental co-ordination skills as well as increasing my dexterity. I also keep Collectors cards which involves taking a great deal of care in respects to the card’s condition in order to sell them on at a later point. I am very good with technology of most kinds and know how to work with computers efficiently and effectively. I have experience building my own desktop and also helping others to do so, handling both software and hardware. I am also a faster learner than most and a particularly meticulous worker. I have experience of working in labs, doing microbiology where I learned about cell culture and aseptic technique as well as several rudimentary lab procedures, skills and techniques including preparing standard solutions, filtrations, using micro pipettes, preparing solutions and agar both suspended and solid, and COSHH and RIDDOR form filling, among other general practice. During my Environmental Sciences course I gained valuable analysing experience using HPLC, mass spectrometry, preparation of standard solutions, vacuum filtration and sonic baths, suspended solid analysis, ICP-OES and spectrometry, sample collection and preparation, and analysis of data collected through high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). I have recently been working as an English second language teacher in Shenzhen, China with a company called CIPTC where I have learned how to effectively manage large number of students across varying age groups, and many related skills such as preparedness for a flexible work schedule as well as working with office shedule
