Barrister specialising in Regulatory law with an emphasis on consumer law, associated fraud, health and safety and fire safety. He is a Contributing editor of Trading Standards: Law and Practice (Jordans), the leading textbook on consumer law and a frequent lecturer at the annual CTSI Symposium. His experience in consumer law includes representing private companies, local authorities and private individuals in both criminal prosecutions and Part Enterprise Act enforcement. He has particular knowledge of the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 (including when charged alongside fraud or fraudulent trading) and the General Product Safety Regulations 2005, and has been instructed in some of the largest cases ever brought by local authorities, as well as investigations by the Competition and Markets Authority.He is recognised as a leader in the field of consumer law by the independent legal directories (The Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners) and described as having "outstanding knowledge of trading standards law", as being "cool as a cucumber" and as advising creatively,"which is a rarity in the brand protection field."His wider regulatory practice encompasses food law, health and safety, fire safety, environmental law and licensing, but he has a particular focus on health and safety law. He is one of the few advocates on the A list of Special Regulatory Advocates, appointed by the Health and Safety Executive. He has been instructed in numerous fatality cases, including where corporate manslaughter has been charged, and appears at inquests, as well as in criminal trials.His brand protection practice focusses on the Trade Marks Act 1994, where he has been instructed to prosecute unauthorised use of trade marks offences on behalf of local authorities and brand holders (private prosecutions).
