Background
About Cameron Fioret
I am currently a Policy Analyst in the Policy Analyst Recruitment and Development Program within the Lands and Minerals Sector in NRCan, as well as a Research Fellow in the Department of Philosophy at Carleton University. Previously, I was a Virtual Visiting Research Fellow at UNU-CRIS, a Policy Analyst in the Canada Water Agency in and a Visiting Scholar in the Water Center in the Graham Sustainability Institute at the University of Michigan. I completed my PhD at the University of Guelph under the supervision of Dr. Monique Deveaux, Canada Research Chair in Ethics and Global Social Change. I have also been a Visiting Postgraduate Research Student at the University of Edinburgh. My research interests revolve around issues of ownership and property, commodification, and distributive justice concerning natural resources. Should naturally occurring necessities for life, like water, be considered common property and commonly owned? Is it impermissible to commodify water? What is the most efficient, yet just, form of ownership of natural necessities? Such questions are central to my research. Academically, I have written on topics concerning property, applied and global ethics, moral and value theory, political philosophy, and informal logic and argumentation. Professionally and voluntarily, I have worked in education, healthcare, environmental and water policy, and international development. I place great value on community service and volunteering both locally and internationally. I believe that education can be a positive and revelatory vehicle to enact change in the world, and I have embraced education with alacrity while working at the elementary and university levels over the past ten years.
