About Cameron Hird

I am a passionate leader and technical expert at the forefront of internationally renowned scientific teaching and research. I have extensive experience in both academic and regulatory ecotoxicology research, alongside a track record of exceptional and pioneering facilities and operations management. At the University of Plymouth I am responsible for laboratories, practical classes, and a large team of technical staff across both the School of Biological and Marine Sciences and the School of Biomedical Sciences. I have specific skills in person and project management, business development, and senior leadership.I have a strong background in biological sciences, having obtained a PhD in Biological Sciences, specialising in aquatic ecotoxicology, from the University of Exeter following my award of a first-class BSc (Hons) in Marine Biology from the University of Plymouth. During my PhD, I published multiple peer-reviewed journal articles and delivered award-winning presentations at both international conferences and public outreach events.I have established myself as a valuable leader through my management of research facilities to date, such as the Marine Invertebrate Culture Unit and the Mireille Gillings Neuroimaging Centre at the University of Exeter, where I implemented robust management models for the facility, which had an associated research portfolio in excess of £25m, and I enhanced the global reputation and impact of these facilities during my time with them. Furthermore I was formerly an Ecotoxicology Study Director at Scymaris, where I provided scientific leadership, business development, and consultancy for aquatic ecotoxicology GLP tests and services, supporting hundreds of major international agrochemical, pharmaceutical, chemical, and veterinary medicine clients.I have a proven track record of advancing scientific knowledge and facilities on the international stage and I have a lot of energy and enthusiasm for this passion going forwards.
