About Cameron Howell

Since obtaining his undergraduate degree, Cameron Howell has pursued a varied and distinguished career in and adjacent to higher education. His expertise spans accreditation, admissions, data analysis, executive communications, executive searches, governance, policy, project management, strategic initiatives, and strategic planning. Howell graduated magna cum laude from Washington and Lee University and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He was as an admissions officer for Washington and Lee for two years. After working for the wholly owned educational subsidiary of the Washington Post Company, he earned his M.Ed. and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia (U.Va.). From 2003 to 2004, Howell served as President of the Raven Society, one of U.Va.’s oldest honorary groups for students, faculty, administrators, and alumni. Howell served as Assistant to the President at U.Va. after earning his Ph.D. He then led the business unit responsible for relationships with 3,300+ colleges and universities at the National Student Clearinghouse, before being named Director of Strategic Planning at the University of South Carolina (USC) and then Vice President for Strategic Initiatives at the University of North Carolina (UNC) System Office. As Principal of his own consulting firm, Howell became a full-time consultant to the USC Board of Trustees. Presently, as Secretary of the University and of the Board of Trustees at USC, Howell coordinates the work of the USC System governing board. He acts as the primary liaison between the Board and the University System’s executive leadership. He serves as the protocol officer and parliamentarian for all meetings of the Board and its Committees. Over time, Howell’s portfolio has entailed the analysis and synthesis of vast streams of information. He has authored institutional and system-wide policies and reports. He has managed projects including surveys issued to UNC System alumni. He has conducted repeated work on behalf of regional accrediting agencies—regarding straightforward compliance certifications and more complicated, special accreditation assignments. With then-President John T. Casteen and others at U.Va, he devised and managed an international consortium of leaders in higher education, co-sponsored by the St. George’s House Trust at Windsor Castle in the United Kingdom. Cameron Howell has presented his research and findings to national and international audiences, to faculty senates, university presidents, university provosts, university boards of trustees, and other stakeholders in higher education.
