About Cameron Planck

Equal parts engineer, scientist, entrepreneur, and citizen of Earth. Currently I’m building Cryosphere Innovation, which is closing the data gap in the world’s harshest environment: the Arctic. Over the years my work has varied considerably. In my youth I worked in bike shops and as a refrigeration technician. In undergrad, I did research in fluid mechanics and passive energy extraction. In grad school, I studied Arctic sea ice and improved understanding of the physics driving thickness changes. Later in grad school I developed technology for measuring sea ice thickness, which ultimately led me to found Cryosphere Innovation. Since 2017, Cryosphere Innovation built assets have created the world's largest repository of seasonal ice mass balance data. Results from our Seasonal Ice Mass Balance Buoys (SIMB3s) are available online in real-time and are freely available to the public. I pride myself on my ability to apply strong engineering principles to diverse and scientifically complicated problems. My favorite step in the development process is building the MVP, but I also love the intricacies and nuance of developing products that work at scale. Beyond career stuff, I love to telemark ski, do photography, play electric guitar, and build overly complicated but highly-functional drawer systems for pickup truck camping.
