About Cameron Roots

I am a forward-thinking interdisciplinary scientist with a robust skill set that spans synthetic and molecular biology, computational biology, and some laboratory automation. My research focuses on the intersection of synthetic and evolutionary biology, with an emphasis on understanding cryptic gene expression within medium-sized genetic systems, such as bacteriophages and complex regulatory networks. In addition to my research endeavors, I am actively engaged in institutional and science policy. As the President of my program's graduate student association, comprising approximately 250 graduate students, I am dedicated to advocating for my peers, shaping institutional policies, and fostering a strong, collaborative community of early career scientists. I am deeply committed to ensuring that everyone has the resources and connections needed for their success. I've also recently published policy materials on artificial intelligence and biology. I am passionate about expediting the adoption of well-supported technologies from translational research and responsible use of genetically engineered systems. My overarching goal is to harness the power of synthetic biology to address pressing human-related challenges, including issues like insulin resistance, climate change, and pollution. I am driven to make a meaningful impact through cutting-edge research and policy advocacy. I speak, read, and write English natively. If necessary, I can communicate in Spanish or Norwegian as well.
