Background

About Campbell MacPherson

Laidlaw Scholarship alumnus and International Relations graduate with a First Class Honours degree from the University of St Andrews. I have a particular interest in synthesising qualitative and quantitative data to uncover new knowledge and relate it to both academic thought and government policy. Specialising in contemporary Scottish diaspora studies, my research interest also lay in Scotland's international affairs, politics, and the sociology of the Scottish nation. Throughout my undergraduate degree, I have undertaken several extra and co-curricular activities which have enriched my research skillset and given me a wealth of experience which I will take into the workplace. As a former scholar of the Laidlaw Leadership and Research Programme, I have received comprehensive leadership training, practiced my leadership skills with a conservation NGO in Uganda, and developed invaluable academic and social research skills, particularly in interview-based research. I have undertaken several research assistantships during my degree, working with field experts and growing my ability to organising research data from a diverse range of sources, communicate research in oral and written formats effectively and efficiently, and follow direction whilst also using my own initiative. I founded and managed The Drew - an online student publication focused on Scottish issues and debates - in which I oversaw a team of ten writers and editors. Directing my peers, I employed appropriate and responsive leadership styles to ensure a comfortable and efficient working process. I am in the process of writing and publishing two peer-reviewed articles on the contemporary Scottish diaspora using data I collected across two studies which collectively include 90 interviews and over 850 survey responses. I am currently pursuing a career in social, political, or academic research in the third sector or in the political sphere.
