Background
About Candace Evans
I am a Doctoral Candidate in Sociology whose interests are broadly centered around chronic illness and disability, social theory, and inequality/stratification. I hold a Master's in Applied Sociology from the University of Massachusetts Boston, as well as a Bachelor's in Sociology and Psychology from McMurry University. Currently, I am working on my dissertation research, which broadly examines how medical knowledge and expertise are institutionally constructed, regulated, and controlled. Too, I am actively engaged in activist and advocacy circles for chronic illness and disability rights, where I draw together my sociological insights with my own embodied experiences to raise awareness for invisible chronic illness and disability conditions. Ultimately, my research agenda is driven by a desire to provide actionable information for improving public policy regarding health care equity and accessibility. In addition to my own research, I am employed as a Graduate Research Assistant at the Natural Hazards Center at the University of Colorado Boulder, where I contribute to various ongoing projects for the National Science Foundation supported CONVERGE facility. One of my primary activities over the past few years has been serving as the co-lead developer of the CONVERGE Training Modules, which are part of a larger initiative to advance social science and interdisciplinary extreme events research efforts through the training and education of a diverse group of researchers. Several of these modules have been supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
