Background
About Candace Hess
I'm the Executive Director of Kids Soar, a faith-based nonprofit in Roanoke, Virginia, dedicated to empowering children and families through education and service. I’ve been part of the Kids Soar team since 2012, first as an educator and now in leadership since 2018. My work focuses on building strong literacy-based programs that provide academic support, enrichment, and hope to children in grades K–5 and their families. With over 15 years of experience working with children and families in the Roanoke community, I bring a mix of nonprofit leadership, educational programming, and small business management to my role. Prior to Kids Soar, I operated my own in-home childcare service for 10 years and also worked as an operations manager in the retail sector. I’m passionate about early literacy, youth development, and creating inclusive spaces where all children can thrive. I’m a member of the International Literacy Association and a long-time member of the United Methodist Church. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my husband and five children, traveling, and paper crafting.
