Background
About Candacy Taylor
I am an award-winning author, cultural documentarian and the owner of Taylor Made Culture - a company that produces content for books, exhibitions, and multimedia projects that enrich, challenge and inspire new ways to think about culture and identity. An exhibition based on my research will be toured by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. The exhibition will travel throughout the United States for three years. My current book,"Overground Railroad: The Green Book and the Roots of Black Travel in America" is published by Abrams. I was a fellow at the Hutchins Center at Harvard University under the direction of Henry Louis Gates Jr. and my projects have been commissioned and funded by numerous organizations including, The Library of Congress, National Geographic, The American Council of Learned Societies, The National Endowment for the Humanities, The National Park Service, and The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. My work has been featured in over 50 media outlets including Newsweek, The Atlantic, The New York Times, Lenny Letter, The New Yorker, PBS Newshour, BBC, The Wall St. Journal, The Los Angeles Times, The Guardian UK, CBC Radio, and on NPR. In 2012, I was one of five people to receive an Archie Green Fellowship from the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress and the only person to have received the reward twice.
