Background

About Candida Sinoway

Hello, I would like to share that I am very curious, this is why I am in research. I am an Anishinabe from the Robinson Superior Treaty of 1850 area. I like to learn new things and I find that doing research is the perfect fit. I love that the curiosity in me has lead me to where I am now. I was the lead research assistant, and community interviewer in the WHiSE (The Walking for Harm Reduction through Street Engagement research project at Elevate NWO. Advocating for our Indigenous peoples is another passion of mine. I enjoy connecting with individuals and building a sense of community. As an Anishinabe Kwe it's important to me that all people are treated with dignity, respect, and inclusivity. I am dedicated to the Research projects, the Circle of Care Project, WHiSE and WHiSE 2.0 that are within elevateNWO, out of Thunder Bay, Ontario. I was part of the team on the Indigenous Women’s Stress Study (IWSS) conducted in Thunder Bay, Ontario, I was a participant, which then turned into a co-facilitator. This is when my passion for Indigenous Women’s health and wellness began to surface. It is important to me that Indigenous people be able to regain our traditional ways of knowing and being. I am committed to researching the health and wellness of Indigenous women while working with community members to help heal the wounds of intergenerational trauma and culture erasure. This process will make Indigenous communities stronger. I am looking forward in applying my gained knowledge that I have acquired through the Aboriginal Community Advocacy Program at Confederation College, connecting it to my research assistant position. One of my strengths is that I can communicate with people, without any issue or difficulties. I also, believe in giving back to my community. I enjoy traveling with family, reading, and walks around any type of water.
