Living in a time of such incredible progress in the applied quantitative sciences has blessed me with a unique opportunity to combine doing what I love with overcoming some of today’s most pressing limitations. Because of this, I focus on translating ongoing advances in quantum computing into tangible applications with the power to improve people’s lives. I see enormous potential for quantum computing and machine learning to transform many fields, but only if innovators truly understand the underlying theory, care about the needs of the user, and communicate effectively with people of varied backgrounds. The old technical and non-technical divides no longer serve us in our efforts to get the most out of new technologies. This is because a deep knowledge of both sides is needed to see the big picture and pick out the subtle connections that make technology useful, not just cool, and transformative, not just advanced.
