Background

About Cara Than

Public Health is both my passion and professional career path. I am a graduate student at the University Washington earning my MPH in Health Services. I take a holistic, equity and social justice approach to health and strive to address barriers and health disparities for vulnerable populations. In my previous role as a Family Program Coordinator at Everett Housing Authority, I worked with people and families from many diverse backgrounds to organize events and activities that promote health. Now, in my MPH program, I have developed a wide breadth of skills in qualitative research, program evaluation, health policy, and health promotion. I have completed deliverables such as policy briefs, reports, and monitoring & evaluation plans for client agencies in Seattle. I apply both my lived experience and academic background to participate as a board member on the Khmer Health Board. The KHB's mission is to promote health equity and to advocate for the Cambodian American community to achieve optimal well-being by breaking down systemic and institutional barriers that impact health outcomes, access, and resources. As a board member I have participated in grant writing, community engagement, and qualitative research. Doing community health work has been the perfect intersection of my passion to promote health equity and using a community-oriented model of public health.
