Background

About Carl Johnson

School leadership can be isolating for a host of reasons. I know because I've been there. This understanding drives my work, no leader should have to navigate school growth on their own. I started my career as a social studies teacher in Connecticut after graduating from the Neag School of Education. My inspiration and focus for teaching has been to create meaningful student experiences while ensuring strong learning outcomes. Over 12 years in the classroom, I taught at both traditional and alternative high schools, coached football and lacrosse, and served as student activities director. This experience taught me that effective leadership isn't just about position, it's about creating environments where students and teachers can do their best work. As an assistant principal and high school principal, I extended this student-centered approach to the building level, working to improve the overall school experience while maintaining academic rigor. I led our school through reaccreditation, transforming what could have been just a compliance exercise into meaningful improvements to our student support systems. This sparked my passion for school improvement on a larger scale, leading me to NEASC. Before joining full-time, I visited numerous schools chairing visiting teams, witnessing how the right approach to accreditation becomes a catalyst for growth. Now, as an associate director at NEASC, I partner with schools to make accreditation a pathway to stronger teaching, learning, and school culture; always with student experience at the center. I'm particularly focused on practical solutions to today's biggest challenges: building teacher retention through supportive professional cultures, helping schools thoughtfully integrate AI, and developing leadership approaches that work in our rapidly changing educational landscape. I believe school leaders do their best work when connected to great ideas and great people. Let's connect, whether about accreditation processes, specific school improvement strategies, or just to share what's working in your school community to create better experiences for students.
