About Carla Baker
I am passionate about Tasmania, my family, food, and cultural history. I am currently a History PhD candidate at the University of Tasmania, after graduating with First Class Honours in 2021. I am also a casual tutor for undergraduate History, part of the organising committee for the School of Humanities fortnightly seminars, and a member of the Australian Food History Network. My research investigates the complexity found within the centre and periphery regarding foodways and imperialism, using Northern Tasmanian apples as an exemplar. It will explore how notions of race, purity, colonisation, and moral consumerism are evident within apple consumption.
