About Carmel Obrien

Over 20 years’ experience working in the financial services sector primarily gained in the (re)insurance industry. Joined Eurco in 1995 and appointed Managing Director in 2002. Held various appointments as officer of Eurco’s client companies over the years including CFO of its principal client, Eurco Re Limited, in addition to director and company secretary roles for other client companies. Extensive financial and general management experience in life and non-life reinsurance and related financial services activities. Strong regulatory knowledge and business transformation experience having undergone a number of changes in Eurco’s wider group structure. This included the disentanglement of Eurco’s parent, Belfius Bank and Insurance, from the Dexia Group in 2012 and the eventual voluntary liquidation of Eurco Re and related subsidiaries in 2015 following a strategic decision by Belfius to exit its Irish reinsurance activities. Joined RSA Insurance Ireland initially on a six-month contract in May 2018 to cover the Head of Financial Reporting and Controls role on an interim basis. My contract was subsequently renewed at which point I assumed the lead role on RSA Insurance Ireland’s IFRS 17 project. Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants since and awarded Diploma in IFRS (distinction) from Chartered Accountants Ireland in 2015. Enjoyed sabbatical between finishing with Eurco in the latter part of 2015 and joining RSA Insurance Ireland. Travelled and pursued other personal interests during this period.
