About Carmen Smith

Carmen Smith is an artist who specializes in metalsmithikg, bead embroidery, and fibre arts. Carmen attended Bowling Green State University and achieved a Bachelors of Fine Arts with a minor in Entrepreneurship. After that, Carmen attended Columbus College of Art & Design and achieved a Masters of Fine Arts in Sculpture with a Teaching Certificate. While at Columbus College of Art & Design Carmen taught as a teachers aide for 1 semester and then taught 2 semesters of basic jewellery 1 as an adjunct instructor. Carmen also worked as the graduate technician in charge of the 3-dimensional arts building. This job involved managing students, safety inspection, tool maintenance, and being aware of what was going on in the building at almost all times. Carmen owned her own business, Beads and Books, from 2012 to 2019, which helped to learn many different skills. Owning a business allows a person to learn every aspect of a business, from marketing to accounting to customer service, teaching and repairs. Most recently, Carmen has improved their marketing, excel, and Social Media skills working for The Charles Herndon Galleries and Sculpture Gardens. This job involves marketing, including Facebook and Instagram, and creating ads and marketing materials. Carmen also works with many different companies depending on what the gallery needs. The Herndon Gallery is located on Kelleys Island, in Lake Erie, only accessible by boat, and mostly a tourist destination, so marketing is a very creative endeavour that required lots of problem-solving and networking. Carmen is also working as a consultant to Tonomi Super Foods. This job has been challenging because it has pushed Carmen to explore how to manage social media for markets that are not their specialty.
