About Carol Chan

I am an anthropologist of migration and im/mobilities, gender, race, conviviality, and critical development. I am interested in how multi-scalar discourses about migration are moralizing and moralized, and how they influence and shape transnational flows of capital and labor. I am author of "In Sickness and in Wealth: Migration, Gendered Moralities and Central Java"(2018, Indiana University Press" and co-author of "Chineseness in Chile: Shifting Representations in the 21st Century"(2022, Palgrave Macmilan) with Maria Montt Strabucchi and Maria Elvira Rios. In Chile, I have completed two three year research projects funded by the National Agency of Research and Development (ANID, Fondecyt) on (1) ethnic Chinese migrations to Chile and within Latin America, and (2) infrastructures of migration between Southeast Asia (mainly Indonesia and the Philippines) and Chile. I was also co-researcher in a research project on migration, citizenship, and housing (CIVIM, civim.cl). Currently, I'm leading a Fondecyt Regular project that seeks to understand the diverse experiences and family histories of Chileans of East Asian descent (Chinese, Korean, Japanese).
