About Carol Hedgspeth

Dr. Carol Hedgspeth currently serves as Deputy Director at The Education Trust-West, an educational justice nonprofit that works to close opportunity gaps that disproportionally affect students of color from low-income families. Using an equity-driven, data-centered, and student-focused approach, Ed Trust-West advocates for equitable education and high academic achievement for all students in California, particularly those from historically marginalized groups. Carol joined Ed Trust - West in October of 2021. Before that, Carol served as Innovate Public School's first VP of Talent and Operations, after serving there for two years as Director of Talent and Continuous Improvement and for one year as Director, Research and Policy. At Innovate, Carol maintained and enhanced Innovate's talent recruitment and management strategies, worked to continuously improve Innovate's diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, and managed day-to-day operations to support staff and boost Innovate's effectiveness in meeting current and future goals. Carol joined Innovate Public Schools in September, 2015. Prior to this, Carol was a researcher at WestEd in the Assessment and Standards Development Services program, managing research projects on topics including the alignment of state assessments to state-and district-level standards and learning objectives, the validity and defensibility of state-level educator effectiveness measures, the adequacy of college- and career-readiness measures in career academies, and metrics for optimal teaching and learning strategies for English learners, multilingual families, and families with low incomes. Carol also has a background in academia, and has more than ten years of experience teaching at the college level, having served most recently as Assistant Professor of Statistics in the Psychology Department at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland from 2008 to 2010. Carol has taught various courses in departments of Psychology and Education. Carol received her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology and M.S. in Social Psychology from Howard University in Washington D.C, and received her B.S. in Psychology from University of California at Berkeley.
