I love puzzles and I love math; that’s why I’m a bookkeeper. Doing books is like working on a picture puzzle. Admittedly, there are more pieces than the average puzzle (1197 federal tax forms, bank reconciliation statements, payroll taxes, workers compensation reports; the list is huge) and the pieces sometimes change during the process as tax laws are updated; but unlike a picture puzzle, the further I delve into the books, the fewer pieces there are to get in the way of the picture. The process is the same though, find the corner pieces and nail them down, work from the edges in, put the pieces that don’t fit immediately to the side and keep the image on the box clear in your mind. Work methodically, don’t panic, don’t rush, and “No, you can’t do that! Put the scissors down!” Eventually all the numbers and statements and forms come together and create a workable image. That image, while also being neat and well-constructed in its own right, is also the functioning financial backbone of my employer.
