Background

About Caroline Dewilde

Caroline's research interests concern the dynamics of social stratification, and resulting inequality and poverty, at different levels of analysis, from a comparative perspective. She publishes widely across the social sciences. In 2011, she received an ERC Starting Grant (HOWCOME). In numerous HOWCOME-publications, the interplay in recent decades between trends in economic and social inequalities and changing housing regimes (housing markets, housing policies, housing wealth) was analyzed. Her most recent work focuses on (changes in) housing as a driver of both poverty and affluence (housing wealth accumulation). She is currently a participant in EQUALHOUSE (From Housing Inequality to Sustainable, Inclusive and Affordable Housing Solutions, Horizon Europe), scheduled to start in 2024. EQUALHOUSE is designed to identify, analyze, and tackle the most significant dimensions of housing inequality across Europe, to clarify their scale, character, causes and consequences and to provide local, regional, national and European housing policymakers and other key stakeholders with robust, evidence-based guidance on how to address these inequalities in a sustainable, inclusive and affordable way. Caroline' work package will provide a comprehensive overview of the scale, form, and socio-economic and spatial distribution of housing inequalities across Europe. She will explore the complex, multi-directional relationships between income and wealth polarization, housing markets and housing inequalities.
