About Caroline Jonson

After graduating from CU Boulder with a degree in Chemical and Biological Engineering, I knew I wanted my career to revolve around constant learning opportunities and helping people. I started working at KBI as a research associate and volunteering on my lunch breaks at a nearby assisted living and memory care facility, Morning Star. While learning new wet lab techniques was interesting to me, I found myself frequently seeking out opportunities to build simple scripts to automate our data analysis processes. My fascination with uncovering patterns in massive data sets grew, fueling my passion for big data and data science. I realized I still wanted to help people, but I wanted to augment my skills in bioinformatics and data science. I started my PhD at UCSF to try to better understand the heterogeneities in Alzheimer's with the goal of improving my bioinformatics skills and contributing to a field that would help minimize the suffering I saw in my volunteer work at Morning Star Assisted Living and Memory Care. I take every opportunity I can to mentor and teach other students as I find helping others very meaningful. In my free time, you can find me climbing rocks, writing poetry, and hanging out with my triplet sisters, always with a mind towards how data science can further enrich our understanding of the world.
