Versatile scholar of Islam researching the history of ideas in the modern and contemporary Muslim world, approaching epistemological questions and thematic concerns in the political and legal domains from a global perspective. Currently venturing into examinations of the interface between religion and literature. Earlier interests include explorations in Southeast Asian history, mapping the Islamization and the European expansion in the region. Author and editor of 12 books: 5 monographs (sole author); 2 multi-volume anthologies; 3 co-edited volumes; 2 annotated translations. 25 yrs experience in higher education: undergraduate & postgraduate teaching (classroom & distance/online learning); research degree supervision; curriculum development and administration (former acting head of department and academic director of a study-abroad program in Thailand). 10 yrs expatriate experience in the Middle East, dealing with personnel management, general administration & government relations. 35+ yrs experience as translator & consultant intercultural communications in private & public sectors
