About Carsten Timmermann

I research and teach on the history of biology and modern biomedicine. I am particularly interested in the history of noncommunicable diseases and have published on the transformation of high blood pressure into a treatable disease and a risk factor, and the history of research on and treatments of lung cancer. I wrote a book on the history of cancer chemotherapy and immunotherapy at the pharmaceutical company Hoffmann La-Roche. More recently I have also done work on the history of mental illness and its treatment. I have a strong and growing interest in museums and the material culture of science and medicine. Recent books- Moonshots at Cancer: The Roche Story (Editiones Roche 2019)- A History of Lung Cancer: The Recalcitrant Disease (Palgrave Macmillan 2013)- Cancer Patients, Cancer Pathways: Historical and Sociological Perspectives (edited with Elizabeth Toon, Palgrave Macmillan 2012)- Devices and Designs: Medical Technologies in Historical Perspective (edited with Julie Anderson, Palgrave Macmillan 2006) I was Academic Lead for the University of Manchester's Museum of Medicine and Health from 2016 to 2023 and Chair of the Executive Committee of the Society for the Social History of Medicine from 2015 to 2018.
