About Carter Bates

I am a passionate Canadian Energy Industry employee and advocate working at Tourmaline Oil Corp. I've been working at Tourmaline for 5 years, with roles in the Emissions & Innovation and Facilities Construction teams. Prior to working for Tourmaline I graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering degree. Through this degree I learned how to problem solve, learn new concepts quickly, research topics productively, and manage my time effectively with a large workload. I took courses related to the energy resource industry such as oil sands upgrading, while a lot of general course content drew examples from oil and gas processing. I gained exposure to economics and cash flow analysis through an engineering-specific economics course. I learned to work both alone on assignments and readings, and as a team through several major and minor projects throughout the degree. I completed the Master of Earth and Energy Resources Leadership (MEERL) program in April 2024. I joined the program to broaden my knowledge of the energy industry while learning through new and unique lenses. While my current work experience is related to development of oil and gas resources, I am passionate about the energy industry as a whole. My current role at work is mostly focused on technical concepts and project management. The MEERL program provided an excellent opportunity to develop my skills in areas I am less directly exposed to, such as business, economics, policy, leadership, and stakeholder engagement. Working with peers from unique backgrounds helped gain a broader perspective on the energy industry. My goal is to be a leader in the energy industry and apply my knowledge and experience to help reduce energy poverty worldwide.
