About Cassandra Smith

Dr. Cassandra Smith is the Integration, Monitoring & Policy Lead for the Climate Security & Resilience Program at the Department of State. In this role she maintains her role as a geological hazard subject matter expert and also works with the intra- and inter-agency to ensure that the program is in alignment with federal policy goals. Additionally, she has taken on more responsibility as a Contracting Officers Representative for federal contracts. Previously she was a Science and Technology Policy Fellow with the same office. In that role, she was a subject matter expert on volcanological hazards and developed a global volcanic hazard index for our diplomatic posts. She also analyzed the current use of Emergency Action Plans in natural hazard response and preparedness. Prior to joining OBO in 2021, Dr. Smith worked for two years as an NSF funded postdoctoral fellow with the USGS Alaska Volcano Observatory in Anchorage AK developing spatiotemporal relationships between globally detected volcanic lightning and eruption cloud dynamics.
